Debunking Common Physical Therapy Myths
Hi, I’m Kat – physiotherapist and co-founder of Lake Therapy. If you’ve ever put off booking an appointment because you’re unsure what to expect, you’re not alone. I hear it all the time—hesitations, worries, and stories that people have picked up along the way.
You might also find how to choose the best physiotherapist and how physiotherapy works helpful.
From fears about pain to confusion over referrals, physical therapy myths can keep people from getting the care they need. Today, I’d love to walk you through the most common misconceptions I hear in clinic—and explain what physiotherapy is really all about.
What Are the Most Common Physical Therapy Myths?
Let’s face it—there’s a lot of outdated or misunderstood information out there. People often come to their first appointment thinking physiotherapy is just massage, or that they have to be injured badly before it’s worth it. These physical therapy myths can get in the way of early treatment and long-term recovery.
The truth is, physiotherapy is about helping you move better, feel better, and live life on your terms—whether you’re recovering from surgery, dealing with everyday aches, or trying to stay strong as you age.
Let’s break down some of the biggest myths, one by one.
Myth 1: Physiotherapy Hurts Too Much
This is one of the most common physical therapy myths I hear: “It’s going to hurt too much.” Understandably, if you’re already in pain, the idea of making it worse is daunting.
The goal of physiotherapy is to reduce your pain—not add to it. Some exercises might create muscle soreness (similar to how you feel after a good workout), but they shouldn’t worsen your existing discomfort. And we’ll always adjust based on how your body responds.
You might arrive with pain, yes. But our aim is to guide you through movement that gradually relieves it—not to push you into more.
Myth 2: You Have to Be Seriously Injured First
This is another big one: “I’m not injured enough to need help.” You don’t need a torn ligament or post-surgery status to benefit from physiotherapy.
In fact, we often work with people who have mild but persistent pain—stiff shoulders, clicking knees, or lower back aches. These are your body’s early warning signs. Ignoring them can lead to bigger issues down the road.
Seeing a physio early on means you can catch imbalances, build strength, and avoid injury altogether. It’s all part of proactive care—and it works.
Myth 3: You Always Need a Referral First
Many people assume they need to go through a GP first, but that’s not the case. Physiotherapists are autnomous practitioners (meaning we do our own assessment and diagnosis) and so all clinics for self-funding clients will offer direct access to physiotherapy. If you’re intending to claim money back from a private health insurance policy then you may need to check if they require a GP referral first.
If you’re unsure, just give us a ring. We’ll talk you through your options. And if you’re not ready to book in, you’re more than welcome to schedule a free discovery call to ask questions first.
Myth 4: I Don’t Have Time for Home Exercises
You don’t need to spend hours each day doing rehab. Your physiotherapist isn’t going to send you home with a long list of impossible tasks.
Instead, we’ll give you a few simple, effective movements that target your specific needs—ones you can realistically work into your routine. We want you to succeed, not feel overwhelmed.
Doing a few of the right exercises regularly can make a huge difference in your progress. Physiotherapy is most effective when it continues beyond the clinic walls.
Myth 5: Physiotherapy Is Just a Fancy Massage
Nope—not even close.
Yes, manual therapy is part of what we do. But physiotherapy involves so much more than massage. It’s a tailored blend of hands-on treatment, movement coaching, exercise, and education.
We look at how you move, how your body functions as a whole, and help retrain your muscles and joints for better performance and less pain. We’re problem-solvers, movement specialists, and cheerleaders rolled into one.
Myth 6: Physiotherapy Is Too Expensive
I get it—cost is a real concern for many people. But here’s something important to remember: untreated issues can end up costing more in the long run.
At Lake Therapy, we’ll work with you to create a plan that fits your health and your budget. Whether that means and intensive programme in the clinic or fewer visits with more of a home plan in between —we’ll find what works for you. We will always give you am honest and realistic opinion on how long it will take to achieve your goals.
Health is an investment. And with the right plan, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
