Making it work in real life

The best plan is the one that fits around your family, not the other way round. A few ideas that our clients find helpful:

  • Walk part of the school run, or park a little further away and walk the last stretch.
  • Use nap time or screen time for a 10-minute home workout: squats, lunges, a plank and a few stretches.
  • Build activity into family time. A bike ride, a walk in the woods or a trip to the pool counts.
  • Book exercise into your diary like any other appointment, so it doesn’t get squeezed out.
  • Be kind to yourself on busy weeks. Something is always better than nothing.

Looking after your body after pregnancy

Pregnancy and birth change a lot in your body, and it’s normal for your core and pelvic floor to need some time and attention. Start with gentle walking and pelvic floor exercises, and build up gradually once you’ve had your postnatal check. If you notice leaking, heaviness, a gap in your tummy muscles or back and pelvic pain, please don’t just put up with it. These are common and very treatable.

Our team includes a physiotherapist who specialises in pregnancy and postnatal care. You can meet the team here.

A 10-minute home workout to get you started

No equipment needed. Do each exercise for 40 seconds, rest for 20, and go round twice.

  • Squats, sitting back as if onto a chair.
  • Glute bridges, lifting your hips from lying on your back.
  • Wall or knee press-ups.
  • Side-lying leg lifts on each side.
  • Marching on the spot to finish.

Keep it comfortable. If anything causes pain, leave it out and speak to a physio.

Remember, it’s not about being perfect. Moving a little more, most days, is what builds strength and energy over time, and it shows your children that looking after yourself matters too.

Fitness for busy mums: your questions answered

How much exercise do I need?

The NHS recommends 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, plus strength exercises on two days. Short sessions add up.

Is 10 minutes of exercise worth it?

Yes. A brisk 10-minute walk or a short home workout still counts, and it’s much easier to fit in.

When can I exercise after having a baby?

Gentle walking and pelvic floor exercises can usually start early on. Wait until your postnatal check before returning to higher-impact exercise, and build up gradually.

Is HIIT safe if I’m returning to exercise?

Ease in first. Build some strength and fitness before adding high-intensity work, especially after pregnancy or a long break.

Can a physio help after pregnancy?

Yes. Our team includes a physiotherapist who specialises in pregnancy and postnatal care, and we can help with back pain, pelvic discomfort and a safe return to exercise.
